A Brief History — Known by many names: The
Last Great Colorado Ski Town, The Wildflower Capital of
Colorado, and, simply, The Butte, more than anything,
Crested Butte is a beautiful, friendly, historic
Victorian town situated in the midst of the spectacular
Elk Mountains. Located at the base of the towering Mt.
Crested Butte and a designated National Historic
District, Crested Butte is a town rich in history.
In the mid-1800’s the town’s early settlers included Ute
Indians, the Spanish and a thriving community of coal
miners. Crested Butte’s age of coal ended in 1952 and
just nine years later the area re-invented itself when
the Mt. Crested Butte Ski Area opened. |
